Koulandjan

from Cascades by The Kora Band

/

about

A song from the old Mandinka repertoire, this song celebrates the Mandinka empire at its height singing praise to Simbon "The Great Hunter," a common prase for the founder of the empire, Sunjata. We play this song in a "post-colonial" style which shows the way that the guitar has been appropriated by the jelis to function in a similar manner as the kora in many modern contexts.
