about

Traditional Guinean, Arranged by the Kora Band

A song written for Sekou Touré, the first president of Guinée, which was the first country in West Africa to gain independence from France in 1958. Sekou Touré was a terrible dictator but a strong patron of his country's musicians and artists, organizing many state-sponsored bands and a record label which produced some of the finest West African recordings of the 60's-80's. The opening lines of this song say that Amadou Sekou's time (generation) was nice and prosperous and the following lines go on to recount proverbial musings on death: "Death laves no one behind, the world is nothing if it is not patience and perseverance. "
